Samsung announces launch of curved smartphone

Smartphone market leader Samsung Electronics has announced it will launch a handset "with a curved display" next month in South Korea, Reuters reported.

The plans were revealed by DJ Lee, president and head of sales and marketing for Samsung's IT and Mobile Communications Division. Lee announced in June that Samsung's Galaxy S4 family was complete, leading tech forums, including CNET, to speculate that the curved handset may be a sports-oriented extension to the Note range, similar to the Galaxy S4 Active.

If true, users can expect a waterproof and dustproof design, and given Samsung's showcasing of a flexible display in January at CES 2013 in Las Vegas, the "curved" model may incorporate that design.

As the high-end market for smartphones becomes saturated, vendors have only two options for revenue growth: budget models or models that break convention. Samsung's recent release of the Galaxy Gear companion watch and its prototype flexible AMOLED screen at CES, show a willingness to take risks in defining the next generation of handsets.
