August 15, 2014 -- More than 60,000 lightweight solar LED lanterns have been distributed by UN agencies since 2011. The $39 emergency lamp, developed in India by Sunlite, has illuminated the lives of over 300,000 people. British RAF aircraft have dropped over 1,000 lanterns to members of the Yazidi religious sect, who are fleeing from Islamic State jihadists in northern Iraq.
