The village of Stamsund in the Lofoten Islands, Norway

In this photo of June 29, 2010 the red houses and fishing boats along the harbor of the village of Stamsund in the Lofoten Islands, Norway is seen on a beautiful summer day. Norway rejected Friday March 11, 2011 oil drilling in ecologically sensitive waters just above the Arctic circle, partly because of worries over a disaster like the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Environmentalists and local fishermen oppose such activities around the Lofoten and Vesteraalen islands off northern Norway, an important spawning ground for cod. Experts say the area could contain as much as 3.4 billion barrels of oil.
