Google unveils wearable computer, Google Glass

It's been about a year since we first got word that Google was developing a wearable computing device, Google Glass. Now Google's offering a glimpse of what they've been working on and how it could change how you interact with technology and the world. The results are pretty amazing.

We now know that you'll interact with Google Glass by saying "Ok, Glass…" followed by a command. According to Google, the device can be used to take pictures, video, and show your friends exactly what you see through the glasses. It will obviously also take the place of a lot of functions that you otherwise need a handheld device for. For example, you can send a message by speaking it (similar to Apple's Siri but without the phone), see directions without a GPS device, see answers to questions, and have your voice translated.

Google Glass is in the early testing stage, but you can still get your hands on a pair. First you'll have to apply. The application? Via Google:

  • Your application must be 50 words or less
  • You must include #ifihadglass in your application
  • You can include up to 5 photos with your application
  • You can include a short video (15 secs max)
  • Be sure to follow us on Google+ (+ProjectGlass) or Twitter (@projectglass) so that we can contact you directly
  • If you're chosen to be a "Glass Explorer" you'll have to pre-order a pair of the glasses for $1500 plus tax and pick up the glasses in New York, San Francisco, or Los Angeles. All that to help Google fix its bugs. Google says: "We're still in the early stages, and while we can't promise everything will be perfect, we can promise it will be exciting."
